A lot happened at the the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb last weekend, some of it inspiring (Greg Tracy lopping 38 seconds off the electric-car record and coming close to taking the fastest time of the weekend) and some of it devastating (motorcycle racer Bobby Goodin losing his life in a crash at the finish line). The spectators were corralled into fenced-in areas this year, in a successful attempt to reduce the number ofdangerous spectator-versus-racer interactions, the course was100 percent paved for the second year in a row, and seven cars and one motorcycle completed their climbs in under 10 minutes. Here are some of the photographs we shot during the 92nd Pikes Peak race.

Bobby Goodin died in the hospital hours after crashing his Triumph at the finish line, a tragedy that cast a pall over the remainder of the event.
The sad news of the weekend was the fatal crash of 54-year-old Bobby Goodin of Flower Mound, Texas, the first motorcycle fatality in the PPIHC since 1982. In a statement issued by Goodin's manager, "Bobby left our lives while doing something that he loved, and it is the only thing that has the ability to deal with the reality of life, the acceptance of the competitors of the dangers in the race, and the heart and soul of a great athlete."

Presumably due to several bad crashes at the corner just past the Halfway Picnic Ground straight (the fastest part of the course) during the 2013 race, the racers were very respectful of that location this year, and there were no wrecks in that spot.

Competitors come from all over the globe to race up the mountain. Here's Ralf Christensson of Sweden, in the process of winning the Vintage class with his 1967 GT350 Mustang.

The quickest time of the race was set by Romain Dumas of Switzerland, in his 2013 Norma M20 RD Limited. 9:05.801, just a few seconds better than the top EV of the event. The smart money says it's just a matter of a few years before an electric car gets P1 at Pikes Peak.

Monster Tajima finished fourth and was one of three EV racers to beat his 2013 record, with a 9:43.900 time in his Monster Sport E-RUNNER.
Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima was back with his electric race car, and he finished fourth overall with a 9:43.900 time.
