Hyundai Veloster Midship concept revealed

Hyundai Veloster Midship concept debuts at Busan Motor Show in South Korea, but there are no plans for a production model

The futuristic-sounding Hyundai Veloster Midship concept has been revealed at this year’s Busan Motor Show in South Korea.

It’s the latest in-house project from the brand’s High Performance Team, the same Im Sebin and Hwang Injin-led group responsible for the i20 WRC.

Known internally as ‘RM’ or ‘Rear Mid’, a reference to the Hyundai’s mid-engine layout, the new concept’s 295bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre Theta GDI engine is located behind the seats – a move designed to offer better weight distribution and handling balance.

According to Hyundai, this set-up is combined with lightweight aluminium suspension and a high-rigidity chassis to “explore possibilities” for the Veloster platform. 

The upshot is the Midship Concept doesn’t currently relate to a future production model, although Hyundai’s stand at the 2014 Busan show does feature the all-new AG, a large flagship saloon the Korean brand hopes will improve its premium image.

Developed using Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design language, the front-wheel drive AG will arrive in local market showrooms later this year, although it could still be rolled out around the world.
