Revised GL gets tweaked engines, refreshed styling and a new name, as the first leaked images reveal the model in full
The new Mercedes-Benz GLS has been given an early debut thanks to these reportedly official images.
The pictures, which were leaked from a brochure and published on aFrench forum, show the new GLS has moved significantly further upmarket than the GL on which it is based. The badging of the GLS is likely designed to give the SUV the same luxury credentials as the flagship S-Class.
Already spied undergoing final testing prior to these leaked images, the GLS is expected to receive its public debut at the LA motor showin November.
The GLS stays on the same platform as before but gets a raft of engine line-up revisions - in line with those already offered on theGLE. It also features styling tweaks to bring it into line with that car, including revised air intakes in the front grille and a revised rear bumper design.
The core of the range will be a V6 diesel model, badged GLS 350d and producing 254bhp - but Mercedes may also choose to offer its four-cylinder diesel - called 250d - in some markets. The range-topper will be an AMG edition powered by a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8, producing 577bhp. Diesel models will get Mercedes’ latest nine-speed automatic transmission.
The GLS is also likely to be offered as a plug-in hybrid, badged 500e and featuring the same 328bhp twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine and single electric motor as the GLE hybrid. It ought to be capable of CO2 emissions of less than 85g/km and around 18 miles of pure-electric travel.
This generation of GLS will also be turned into an even more luxurious SUV, carrying the Maybach badge and giving Mercedes a rival for the Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce's Cullinan and ultra-luxurious Range Rovers from Jaguar Land Rover’s SVO division.
