When it comes to off-brand GTs, the less-than-discriminating buyer has no shortage of unholy hybrids to choose from. But Bizzarrinis are (somewhat ironically) entering Enzo-era Ferrari territory price-wise, as are Iso Grifos, and Jensen Interceptors are cool but hopelessly stodgy.
The 1968 AC Frua Coupe featured at Bring a Trailer strikes an interesting balance of style, performance and exclusivity. It's trans-Atlantic flair at a bargain-basement price -- at least when you compare it to the ever-escalating cost of its contemporaries.
The AC Frua Coupe is hardly a purebred: Pietro Frua of Maserati Mistral fame supplied the lines. AC of AC Cobra fame supplied the underpinnings. And Ford supplied the motivation in the form of a 428 cu.-in. big-block V8.

It has the right combination of gran turismo proportions, Mach V swoopiness and American muscle. Are its lines as faultlessly pleasing as those on a Ferrari 2+2 of a similar vintage? No, not at all -- but its brash styling and unique cues are part of what makes this AC Frua coupe a standout.

This example, one of just 49 fastback coupes built, appears to be clean inside and out and looks to be ready to rock right as soon as your check clears. At $269,500, it certainly isn't cheap; you could buy any number of slightly used late-model supercars for that price, and you might even be able to get into a classic Maserati 3500 GT if you act fast. But while your buddy's Lambo Islero is stuck in the shop, you'll be able to fire up your AC Frua Coupe's rock-solid American heart and blast off.
